Welcome To Gotta be NC
Helping South African Refugees Settle, Thrive, and Feel at Home in the Tar Heel State
We’re a committed group of South Africans who deeply understand the painful decline of a country we once loved. As much as we’ve hoped to stay, it no longer feels like home. This isn’t the place to dwell on what’s gone wrong in South Africa, and each of us has our own personal reasons for applying to this program. From this point forward, our focus is on the opportunities and promise that lie ahead – in our new home, the United States of America!
Our logo
The colors of the North Carolina flag – blue, red, and white – symbolize loyalty, courage, and purity/liberty. These values mirror those of the U.S. flag and serve as a powerful reminder of the principles on which both the state and the nation stand.

The white star set against the blue field represents North Carolina’s place in the Union, as well as its proud nickname: “The Old North State.”
First in Flight – The Wright brothers, whose groundbreaking journey we all learned about in school, are a foundational part of North Carolina’s identity.
First in Freedom – North Carolina was the first state to call on others to declare independence from British rule. That spirit of bold defiance and yearning for liberty still echoes today.
As refugees, this symbolism carries deep personal meaning. It has become necessary for us to Take Your Flight from South Africa and Land in Freedom in the United States – to flee a flag of oppression and be welcomed by one that stands for liberty.
As time passes and we each find our footing, it will become clear that North Carolina gains as much from our presence as we gain from calling it home. We look forward to fully embracing the rich, warm culture of our gracious hosts.
When we land, we carry with us a heritage that is bold and vibrant. We will still cheer for the Boks, gather for weekend braais, walk barefoot in slops, and share stories around a fire – but we will do so with hearts rooted in gratitude and eyes set firmly on a hopeful future.
